Abani tells stories of people: people standing up to soldiers, people
showing compassion, people being human or reclaiming their humanity. And
according to this critically-acclaimed Nigerian poet and novelist,
these stories are a way of imparting something called "ubuntu." Meaning,
the only way for me to be human is for you to reflect my humanity back
at me. "...the world is never saved in grand, messianic gestures but in
the simple accumulation of gentle, soft, almost invisible acts of
compassion; everyday acts of compassion..." -
