I Went A Decade Without Dating. Here's What Happened

Save

Ten years ago, my life was a complete mess.

I was 25 years old, my grandmother was dying, and my Adderall use was quickly becoming an addiction. I was in a world of debt, and losing friends fast. Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, the man I loved started cheating on me and my relationship ended in violence.

Up until that point, I'd never had good experiences with dating. My previous relationships had created a yearning for validation that ruled me mentally, physically, and emotionally. They caused me to feel weak, inadequate, and worthless in every aspect of life.

I would constantly attract men who did not appreciate my value because I did not appreciate my own self-worth at the time.

I knew I needed to learn to love myself the way that I wanted someone else to love me. But I didn't know how.

One night when things were at their worst, I was walking toward my condo and saw a book sitting on a bench. I could feel a distinct energy drawing me toward the text, and I stood frozen when I saw the words "fourth deadly sin" on its cover. When I opened the book, I saw that it was talking about lust. I'm a spiritual person, and I took the text as a sign that I needed to stop putting my relationships before God and myself.

I decided to let go of relationships altogether, and I made a commitment never to date again. I told myself that fulfilling my purpose was far more important than anything I could gain from a romantic partnership. Intimacy was something I thought I would never have again, and I was totally okay with that.

I avoided situations in which I could be hit on — I stopped going out and barely communicated with members of the opposite sex unless they were married or in a serious relationship. I built a wall around myself that was so high that I had no idea how anyone could ever break it down. Intimacy simply wasn’t an option, so my entire life became about working to create a business. I began developing courses for life coaches and eventually started traveling near and far to teach at wellness retreats.

The Real Reason Why You Haven't Healed Your Trauma/Depression/Heartbreak

Huffpost Healthy Living

The prevailing psychological wisdom of our time tells you that your current dysfunctions are probably a result of your past experiences, e.g., your painful childhood, your stupid parents, your abusive first love, and the wars, famines, and hurricanes you were forced by fate to go through. If you're metaphysically inclined, you may even believe that your present pain has its roots in a past life, a past past life, a past past past life. (By the way, after talking to many who claim to have recovered memories from past lives, I can assure you that nobody on earth has ever had a great life in the past. Since there's nothing new under the Sun, it's safe to assume that a great life will not exist in the future, either. So you can stop looking now.)
You were told that healing from past pains would get you happiness. But if you're reading this, you probably have been on the "healing path" for a long time, under the assumption that once you heal your past, you'd finally find fulfillment and freedom. That was how I looked at my life, for a long time. I went from one healing modality to another, on a quest for the Holy Grail that would bestow bliss to eternity.
Such a quest is useful, until it is not. After years of professional counseling, shamanic sessions, cleansing retreats, and chocolate cake fixes, I realized that the healing journey simply would not end on its own. If you look for them, you can always find traumas in yourself, old and new, to be healed and cleansed. A completely healed human is a mythological construct. And the quest for healing can be a rat race that is easy to get on, but hard to step off.

Let Yourself Be Worthy

“The least of things with a meaning is worth more in life than the greatest of things without it.” – Carl Jung
restore-your-worth
Pretend I’m an enlightened Yogi-Zen Master sitting high on a jagged, wind-blasted, unforgiving mountain. You’ve traveled through hell and brimstone to reach the top. The path was filled with a plethora of trials and tribulations. You’re now exhausted, covered in sweat, and seeking only one thing: wisdom.
Imagine me illuminated, meditating, glowing like a fractal-Buddha. My wrinkles, my long gray beard and my wise eyes staring down the improbable universe that surrounds us. You are taken aback, astonished by my vibrant, thunderously quiet energy. You’ve come for answers. And though you’re skeptical, your curiosity trumps your doubt.
The stories you’ve heard about me could no longer be ignored. And so you ascended the mountain, and now you’re standing in front of me, nearly out of breath, and you ask:
“Oh wise master, how do I conquer fear, guilt, shame, and attachment?
I look down at you from my precarious stone perch, eyes blazing with thousand-year-old wisdom. Moments go by without a word. The silence is deafening. Finally you can take it no longer,
“What,” you plead, “what is the answer?”
I open my mouth as if to speak. More moments go by. Seconds pass as if in infinities. Then, finally, I say only four words: Let yourself be worthy. That’s right! You want to conquer fear, guilt, shame, attachment? Let yourself be worthy. You want to break mental paradigms and stretch comfort zones? Let yourself be worthy.
You want to think outside of boxes and hijack evolution into revealing its secrets? Let yourself be worthy. You want to discover love and recondition preconditions? Let yourself be worthy. You want to usurp thrones, burn down high-horses, and change the world? Let yourself be worthy. The irony is that you just climbed a MOUNTAIN! That very act was an act of self-worth. I mean, the very act of climbing that mountain was an act of conquering fear, and letting go of guilt, shame, and attachment.

Eight Signs You may be Experiencing a Spiritual Awakening

spiritual-awakening

spiritual-awakening“Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.” ~ Miles Kington
1. You’re more in touch with your spiritual foundations through transformative meditation:
You realize, as Jung noted, that “the experience of the Self is always a defeat for the Ego.” And through the seven primary chakras you are becoming one with the cosmos, receptive to stimuli to which, in the time before, you were insensate.
You’ve felt the powerful kundalini energy rising up from your roots, passing through the sacred waters of the sacral, basking in the fire of the solar plexus, breathing in the vital breath of the heart, absorbing the ethereal voice of the throat, pouring through the dissolution of the Third Eye, and spilling up and out like a mighty fountainhead into the greater cosmos.
2. You are beginning to want more freedom and less stuff:
Your heart is not heavy with materialistic burden. You understand that ownership-based love can never be true love. You realize like Osho said, “Love is not about possession. Love is about appreciation.” And although there are some people in the world who are so poor all they have is money, you continue to love without expecting anything in return. You have frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation for the abundance the natural world has to offer. Like Gandhi, you live simply so that others may simply live.
3. You realize that the door to your prison cell is wide open (and always has been):
seeing-the-light
Rumi, “Why do you stay in prison when the door is wide open?”
You have a growing propensity toward breaking mental paradigms, stretching comfort zones and thinking outside of the current box. You have a tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than from fears based on past experiences, and you are constantly attempting to recondition any and all preconditions.
You enjoy each moment, relishing, in carpe-diem-ecstasy, your bountiful freedom. It was Rumi who asked, “Why do you stay in prison when the door is wide open?”
4. The world is a playground, and you are on recess:
You don’t take yourself too seriously. You realize that, though hard work is necessary, sincere play is paramount. You understand that play is the only way that the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold. Your sense of humor has become your safety net. You understand that sincerity is primary and should always trump seriousness. Like Nietzsche wrote, “The struggle of maturity is to recover the seriousness of a child at play.”

One Woman’s Journey to Self Esteem and Self Acceptance

I Am Happier, Heavier

Rachel Oh Uiginn Estapa
It’s not insane to believe that once you lose weight, life gets better.
For years, I heard stories from those who have shed pounds, recharged their lives, never felt better, and speak so confidently that once the weight was gone, they became the person they were meant to be: a thin and happy one.
I do not doubt their happiness when they share their story, but I also don’t believe that by losing weight, they have some superior knowledge about happiness that us heavier-folk don’t. How do I know this? I’ve been fat and thinner. And I’ve been at my happiest, heavier.
End of high school and into college, I was BIG and used to decline attending parties because I didn’t remotely have anything cute to wear, so I hid behind sarcasm and baggy shirts. And dating-wise… wait, WHAT dating life?
Midway through my freshman year of college I joined Weight Watchers and the gym, becoming obsessed with both. Within seven months, I lost 55 pounds, fit into a size ten and even felt sexy for about fifteen minutes!
But as the scale dipped lower and the compliments on my weight-loss wore off, something else emerged: I felt exhausted, disappointed and still unhappy.
“Ugh, I just can’t keep this up…” I recall saying to myself after a Weight Watchers meeting, of which was my lowest weigh-in ever. I felt defeated and broken that after all my effort, not much beyond the scale changed.

Treasures of the Heart

November 7, 2013

I’m so excited to say that I was just recently encouraged to write a short story about my journey into motherhood for possible publication in a pro-life project benefiting a women’s health clinic with the Gabriel Network, in Baltimore, Maryland.  The project was created to encourage young women to choose life for their child, regardless of their circumstances.  I’m so flattered to be even a small part of such a meaningful endeavor.  What could be more important than encouraging the preservation of life.

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Psalm 139:13

Treasures of the Heart

Treasures of the Heart
My submission is presently being considered for publication with CausePub.com in Jillian Amodio’s book “New Life Within”.  I say “considered” because the final stories chosen will be determined by votes. The more votes I get the better my chances of being published. So if you are willing, I’d love it if you would read my story and if you like it, I’d be honored if you would vote for my story and ask a few of your friends to do so as well.  And perhaps they’ll tell two friends…and they’ll tell two friends…and so on and so on.

My husband and I were what everyone called “meant to be”. What started as friendship developed into a beautiful love story and I married the love of my life. That being said our life was far from perfect but it was ours to go through together and here we are 17 years later. Two years into our marriage we felt we were ready to start a family. Did I say ready? Actually I was petrified but felt my clock ticking away.
I was 32 when I got pregnant with my first child. I was excited and nervous all at once realizing that I was standing at the threshold of motherhood. Was I ready? I had my doubts because although I was in my thirties I still had moments when I felt like a kid myself. I had heard so many horror stories about pregnancy and painful deliveries that I was fearful of the unknown. As my pregnancy progressed I was constantly sick to the point that instead of gaining weight I had actually lost 15 pounds. Forget morning sickness, I had all day sickness. You would think that I was miserable but the truth is that I felt the complete opposite. Yes my body was changing and nausea did take over but the moment I felt that life that was growing inside me moving, kicking all I could focus on was how amazing I felt. I hadn’t met her yet but had already fallen completely in love with her. Being pregnant was the most amazing feeling I had ever had. There was nothing to compare it to because it was so unique. I loved being pregnant so much so that on a particular night I started having contractions and had a bit of a panic attack because I wasn’t ready to stop being pregnant. I didn’t want to give up that beautiful feeling. I think that somewhere in my mind I felt like I was doing something SO important, something that would make a difference. I had never felt that important before. It turned out to be Braxton Hicks and I was so happy to know that I could be pregnant for a little bit longer.
A few weeks later contractions came again this time I was ready and so eager to meet my baby. On December 18th 1998 my beautiful daughter was born and I was never the same. How can you describe a heart so full that it overflows? I was now in that club, you know that one where you get to say “you’ll understand when you’re a mom”. It’s so true! The minute I held her for the first time I experienced an overwhelming flood of emotions that I had never experienced before. There she was with her red puffy cheeks and sweet trusting eyes and she was mine. True I had to share her with my husband but she was mine. I was in heaven. What was it like? Well, I was determined to breastfeed and therefore did not sleep. This little 6 lb baby girl always wanted to feed. I didn’t know what I was doing but trudged through until one morning I was pumping breast milk and wondered why the milk was pink. My inexperience with latching on the baby was showing. I’ll spare you the gory details so let’s just say that I was raw and in so much pain but could not, would not give up. I was devastated to think that I wouldn’t be able to nurse her if I started giving her formula while I healed. God knows our limits and He knows our needs. A few weeks later I was ready to try again and she latched on like a pro. God is good and I felt the blessing. She nursed until she was almost 9 months old.
As she grew her father and I enjoyed every moment. She has always been our tender hearted warrior loving everyone and always willing to serve others. She truly has a beautiful heart. What a blessing she has been.
Fast forward four years later as we decide that it’s time for another baby or at least time to start talking about it. I am a planner and need time to get used to changes so when we had just barely started considering another child and I suspected that I may already be pregnant I panicked. I bought a pregnancy test in order to remove any doubt. I remember that day as if it were yesterday. As I waited for the results I prayed and asked God for a false alarm. I didn’t feel like I could love another child as much as I loved my daughter. I couldn’t fathom that idea. When the results were ready I was afraid to look but mustered up the courage anyway. When I saw the blue negative sign I dropped to my knees, put my head down and cried a deep painful cry as if I had lost a child. At that very moment I knew I was so wrong. I knew then and there that I wanted another child and that there was so much more love to be given.
This time around it was just not happening. We tried for a little over a year and nothing. I started feeling as though it was my fault because I put it off for so long or because back then I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it at all. I was stressing myself out in a big way. Once I finally let go and relaxed that’s when at long last it happened. We were elated! The pregnancy this time around was almost identical I lost another 15 pounds before I ever gained an ounce. That quickly changed after the first 6 months. I enjoyed it just the same. This one was a “live one” I thought to myself. I remember being in church as they played the worship music and feeling my belly move to the beat. He’s been dancing ever since. I can’t seem to keep that boy still. He’s a character and just the thought of him makes me smile. My gorgeous boy was born on January 22, 2003. Everything was great at the hospital and luckily this time around nursing was a cinch for a pro like me.

Deborah Cohan : Inspiring Others to Live Life and Joy Even Through The Most Difficult Of Times

Starting  my  blogging  day  off on a  beautiful note.  I stumble across this video and wanted to share it with all of  you.
Deborah Cohan is an  OB/BYN who has been  scheduled for Double Mastectomy  Surgery.  Her love for life  is amazing.  This  flash mob in the  operating room was done at  her  request.     Cohan requested that friends and family make  videos of healing joy of  themselves dancing to Beyonce as well so that she can watch them during her recovery.
“I have visions of a healing video montage,” she wrote. “Nothing brings me greater joy than catalyzing others to dance, move, be in their bodies. Are you with me people?”
Her joy and love  for life  are  inspiring.  May her positive  energy and her love of life bring her many  years of joy  with  her  children.  Blessings of Love  and Light to Deborah and all those  who made it possible for her to celebrate life in  her very  own unique way.
You can read messages from Deborah’s fans dancing in solidarity on her CaringBridge page.

We are created by Universal Love with the intention of spreading Love and making the lives of others a masterpiece.

Align Yourself with Universal Love

By Michael Cupo.
We make our life what it is, but we are not the creator of it. We are created by Universal Love with the intention of spreading Love and making the lives of others a masterpiece.
Paint a masterpiece of LoveThink of your life as a giant canvas. Everyday you have an opportunity to paint a new picture. The more your mind is settled, the more in touch you become with your creative self. You can make each day a masterpiece inspired by love, or you can just create an ordinary day of existence. There is nothing wrong in this, it just that life isn’t lived to the fullest. It is still beautiful in its essence, but its beauty is not known because of unconsciousness. You are not the creator of life, but you create the way the life you are given is lived.
Although we don’t create life itself (only the Universe can do that), we are responsible for how it is lived. Our origin is not of our doing. No matter what humans do, we will never be as miraculous as our creator.

Gandhi’s Top 10 Fundamentals for Changing the World

The Positivity Blog

by Henrik Edberg

Gandhi’s Top 10 Fundamentals for Changing the World“You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.”
“The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problem.”
“If I had no sense of humor, I would long ago have committed suicide.”
Mahatma Gandhi needs no long introduction. Everyone knows about the man who lead the Indian people to independence from British rule in 1947.
So let’s just move on to some of my favourite tips from Mahatma Gandhi.

1. Change yourself.

“You must be the change you want to see in the world.”
“As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world – that is the myth of the atomic age – as in being able to remake ourselves.”
If you change yourself you will change your world. If you change how you think then you will change how you feel and what actions you take. And so the world around you will change. Not only because you are now viewing your environment through new lenses of thoughts and emotions but also because the change within can allow you to take action in ways you wouldn’t have – or maybe even have thought about – while stuck in your old thought patterns.
And the problem with changing your outer world without changing yourself is that you will still be you when you reach that change you have strived for. You will still have your flaws, anger, negativity, self-sabotaging tendencies etc. intact.
And so in this new situation you will still not find what you hoped for since your mind is still seeping with that negative stuff. And if you get more without having some insight into and distance from your ego it may grow more powerful. Since your ego loves to divide things, to find enemies and to create separation it may start to try to create even more problems and conflicts in your life and world.

2. You are in control.

“Nobody can hurt me without my permission.”
What you feel and how you react to something is always up to you. There may be a “normal” or a common way to react to different things. But that’s mostly just all it is.
You can choose your own thoughts, reactions and emotions to pretty much everything. You don’t have to freak out, overreact of even react in a negative way. Perhaps not every time or instantly. Sometimes a knee-jerk reaction just goes off. Or an old thought habit kicks in.
And as you realize that no-one outside of yourself can actually control how you feel you can start to incorporate this thinking into your daily life and develop it as a thought habit. A habit that you can grow stronger and stronger over time. Doing this makes life a whole lot easier and more pleasurable.

3. Forgive and let it go.

“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.”
“An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind.”
Fighting evil with evil won’t help anyone. And as said in the previous tip, you always choose how to react to something. When you can incorporate such a thought habit more and more into your life then you can react in a way that is more useful to you and others.
You realize that forgiving and letting go of the past will do you and the people in your world a great service. And spending your time in some negative memory won’t help you after you have learned the lessons you can learn from that experience. You’ll probably just cause yourself more suffering and paralyze yourself from taking action in this present moment.
If you don’t forgive then you let the past and another person to control how you feel. By forgiving you release yourself from those bonds. And then you can focus totally on, for instance, the next point.

4. Without action you aren’t going anywhere.

“An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching.”
Without taking action very little will be done. However, taking action can be hard and difficult. There can be much inner resistance.
And so you may resort to preaching, as Gandhi says. Or reading and studying endlessly. And feeling like you are moving forward. But getting little or no practical results in real life.
So, to really get where you want to go and to really understand yourself and your world you need to practice. Books can mostly just bring you knowledge. You have to take action and translate that knowledge into results and understanding.
You can check out a few effective tips to overcome this problem in How to Take More Action: 9 Powerful Tips. Or you can move on to the next point for more on the best tip for taking more action that I have found so far.

5. Take care of this moment.

“I do not want to foresee the future. I am concerned with taking care of the present. God has given me no control over the moment following.”
The best way that I have found to overcome the inner resistance that often stops us from taking action is to stay in the present as much as possible and to be accepting.
Why? Well, when you are in the present moment you don’t worry about the next moment that you can’t control anyway. And the resistance to action that comes from you imagining negative future consequences – or reflecting on past failures – of your actions loses its power. And so it becomes easier to both take action and to keep your focus on this moment and perform better.
Have a look at 8 Ways to Return to the Present Moment for tips on how quickly step into the now. And remember that reconnecting with and staying in the now is a mental habit – a sort of muscle – that you grow. Over time it becomes more powerful and makes it easier to slip into the present moment.

Nipun Mehta, Harker Commencement 2013: Give, Receive, Dance

servicespace1·

Published on Jul 8, 2013

When the student body of an elite private school in Silicon Valley was given the chance to vote on who would give their graduation address, their first pick was Nipun Mehta. An unexpected choice for these teenagers, who belong to what Time magazine called the "Me Me Me Generation". Nipun's journey is the antithesis of self-serving. More than a decade ago, he walked away from a lucrative career in high-tech, to explore the connection between inner change and external impact. ServiceSpace, the non-profit he founded has now drawn over 450,000 members across the globe. In this electrifying address that garnered a standing ovation, Nipun calls out the paradoxical crisis of disconnection in our hyper-connected world -- and offers up three powerful keys that hold the antidote.
